LIBERTATIS P R VINDEX This flattering title, Vindicator of the Liberty of the Roman People, appears on the obverse of a silver medallion of that Liberticide, Augustus. So much for Roman flattery. It is, however, the only instance in which the adopted son of the great Julius Caesar received such adulation on a coin, and none of the succeeding emperors offer on their respective coins a similar example. The reverse of this coin exhibits a female figure, holding a caduceus; near to which is an altar with a serpent on it. The word PAX is in the field of the coin, and the whole is within a laurel garland.
